Have you noticed how dogs are attracted to cyclists front wheels? It must come from the instinct to hunt. As a daily cyclist I always slow down for dogs. I only do this, because of an unfortunate incident I had on Walthamstow marshes. I was on the dis-used railway going to Coppermill Lane. It was a great day, and calm. I got up to a great speed on the flat and saw a young couple in front of me walking a dog.
Something in me said, “slow down, you might hurt the dog”, while another part of me said, “go on, don’t lose the speed you have created, lets get home”. As soon as I got to the couple I saw the dog, all happy and yapping around with frivolity. For no apparent reason, it decided it would be fun to jump in front of me while I was doing a good 20 mph. I slammed the brakes on and hit the dog. However, I did not stop and went tumbling down a bank. I took the full impact on my hands and knees. I looked like a monster with blood pouring down my face, hands and knees. The poor couple were aghast with horror! I re-assured them I was OK and thankfully the dog was OK as well, and started to yap. Lesson learned, dogs are like moths to the candle.
